The BBC has had a fair amount on its plate in
the last few months.
Jonathan Ross and Russell
Brand's antics and the scandals surrounding tele-voting have
all cast a cold light on the corporation's reputation.
The broadcaster has imposed tough
new rules for its producers to follow - an effort to tighten things
up and maintain its place as arguably the most trusted source of
information in the global media landscape.
This week's unfortunate events
connected to the stripping of the University
Challenge title from Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and
its award to Manchester University demonstrate that no matter how
tight your internal procedures are, your reputation can still be
damaged by persons / actions from outside. How were they to know
that one of the Oxford members would become ineligible?
What is key in these circumstances is
to act swiftly, decisively and stick with your decision. In a
different context the University Challenge result may have been
allowed to stand, but at the moment the BBC needs to be seen to
acting fairly and within the rules.
A tough call to make and perhaps a
bit over the top but the rules and the rules and
Mr Paxman never gives an inch, does he?
