Why Sky’s no Belle de Jour

This week, my thoughts are dominated by Dr Brooke Magnanti, aka Belle de Jour, and James Murdoch, BSKYB's chairman and non-executive director.

Leaving aside issues of morality, let's concentrate instead on the question of promise.

Now I'm not quite sure how much Dr Magnanti and Mr Murdoch have in common other than being expert communicators, marketing the irresistible promise of instant gratification.I

In Dr Magnati's case, her blog seduces millions and her 'personal services' satisfied the interests of a wealthy few.

Mr Murdoch, on the other hand, tempts his customers with a bold promise of unrivalled home entertainment and an 'easy' upgrade to Sky+HD.

Ok so I admit it, I've had a peak at the blog, and yes it is, well, quite raunchy. I can see the attraction - for some people, obviously not me. Congratulations the good doctor: you've delivered on your promise.

Mr Murdoch, by contrast, has driven me to despair. The Sky upgrade has been far from easy and resulted in furious rows with:
1. Wife
2. Children
3. Father-in-law
4. Four Welsh call centre staff
5. The Sky technician

Shame on you Mr Murdoch: you lied!

No doubt the upgrade will be worth it in the end, but given the dreadful experience, not to mention a limited access to the remote control, I know where I'd rather spend my money next time…

Have a beautiful day now.
