Much has been said about the difficulties facing the government's communications team of late. No-one's listening to us, they bemoan.
The problem is slightly different, in my opinion. Gordon Brown isn't listening.
Whilst the nation's housewives tighten their belts, pay down debt and reign in the family budget Gordon thinks they want the government to do the opposite.
So he borrows money he doesn't have to fund more childcare places and free internet - just two in a line of relaunches and initiatives that have completely failed to chime with the electorate.
When he does something that shows real leadership and decisiveness the electorate listens and gives him credit - witness the poll bounce after the HBOS sale.
So, either his communications advisors don't have the bottle to tell him what the country really wants, or Gordon doesn't want to hear. Either way, someone isn't listening and communication, as we all know, involves both speaking and hearing.
