"Who needs football?" asks Martyn Best, staunch Evertonian, knowing
full well that the answer is a very obvious,
'everyone'.
But this weekend, from a very local,
partisan view, there is no football. "Oh no", goes the
cry, "What will we do?"
The answer for a sportingly
passionate Liverpool consists of a full weekend of sport at the
Echo Arena. Having recently completed its
first full year, the Echo Arena is firmly placed within the wider
cultural hearts of Merseysiders who have embraced its award-winning design, its wonderful
organisation and its stadium filling acts. A wide and wonderfully
eclectic mix of musical, sporting and cultural performances have
ensured that the Arena is truly regarded as one of the key legacies
of last year's triumph as European Capital of Culture.
And, ladies and gentlemen, this
weekend we present the best that British boxing and British
basketball has on offer.
The dual delights of home town hero
and Olympic silver medalist
David Price's professional
debut, promoted by Britain's world rated David
Haye, is combined with a table-topping clash between
the Everton Tigers and Newcastle Eagles. Two
great heavyweights, sadly not against each other, on Saturday,
followed by the two cup winning teams in this season's
compelling British basketball title chase.
So, for just one weekend. We
don't need football, and with a
very clear interest in Sunday's proceedings,
I would welcome you all to our very dear Echo Arena.
PS - the issues we all have to balance in our life -
a very happy birthday on Sunday to my dear wife Mally and to Jake
and Abby attaining adulthood.
