When social media backfires

As election campaigns get underway, the political parties are getting to grips with social media as a way of engaging with voters.

The Tories were left red-faced yesterday after their Cash Gordon website, which was set up with the intention of humiliating Gordon Brown, backfired.

The site automatically displayed messages from Twitter that included the hash tag #cashgordon.

Rather than attracting Conservative voters, people took the opportunity to vent their frustrationsat the Tories, including more swearwords than you could shake a stick at and links to websites they would no doubt rather not be associated with.

Which shows that when you put yourself at the mercy of the social media gods, you don't always get the response you hoped for.
