What is good for you ?

Martyn Best

Martyn Best, Managing Director

How do you decide what's good for you, asks Martyn Best, in a week when so many conflicting bits of advice make the answer to that question so difficult.

The subject today is a drink related one; and one which normally presents very few issues for me, and my many fine friends.

However this week, we have been informed that:

1 - Guinness has been proven to actually be very good for you
2 - An 18% proof beer is an irresponsible product
3 - A 50 year limited edition fine malt whiskey from Glenfiddich is considered a worthy celebration
4 - All drink should be taxed even more highly to discourage those that do
5 - Beer helps you lose weight

So, what do we do? Well, firstly, I would ignore the last one, as I have made that one up, and then I would probably wonder why there are so many conflicting views on this simple subject.

It does however mildly astonish me, but without any bitterness, that so many opinions abound around the subject of drinking. It is an entirely voluntary pastime, generally provides some enjoyment to those partaking of it, and any repercussions are largely self-inflicted. Yet, those that provide cautionary advice mostly fail to emphasize the aspect of personal responsibility.

We should of course look after those who need looking after, but once again is our nanny state intruding too much?

I did however, like the final comment by Brewing Research International on the Guinness claim, "I would like to see this research repeated".

I'll drink to that.
