What do you believe?

Conflicting predictions about the state of the UK economy have left Dougal Paver in no doubt what to do. "Push harder," he says.

A perfunctory scan of the weekend's papers offered the usual contradictions about the state of the UK and global economies.

In the grey corner were the doom-mongers, offering apocalypse now or, most likely, some time next May.

In the golden corner were the optimists who saw opportunity in others' misfortune. "Out of recessions are great fortunes built," quothe one sage.

What to believe? Instinctively that's down to, well, your instinct. If you're a glass-half-empty sort of character then stock up on the weaponry, buy a gaff somewhere in mid-Wales with a large vegetable garden and watch on Sky TV as the cities burn.

Me? I'm a glass-positively-overflowing sort of character and I refuse to believe Paver Smith is doomed, Liverpool is doomed or capitalism is doomed. If you think you're stuffed then you already are.

Nope: even if the UK PR market declined by 30% (unheard of) then that still leaves a huge chunk to go at. And we have a plan for going at it and grabbing some more. We'll be sharing that plan with our team this Friday at our annual review and awards ceremony and it will be unremittingly positive.

We'll be focusing on the important basics, like cash flow, cost-base, our new training academy, ISO 14001, our culture, sales, marketing and relationship management and, of course, our customers - and then pepping that up with a few deft moves of our own. But doomed? Not the north west's best PR agency.
