Want to beat the BNP? Cast a light on their unworkable policies

Receiving BNP fliers through her letter box has done nothing to endear them to Catherine Stewart.

I got home from work last week to find the worst piece of mail I have ever received in my letterbox - a BNP flier.

The next day we also received one in our offices in the Plaza. They must be targeting the city centre, both businesses and residents.

There is some concern that low voter turnout in next month's European elections could lead to the BNP getting a seat in the Brussels parliament. It certainly wouldn't reflect our tradition of an open, fair and tolerant society.

Some of the electorate is becoming disengaged with politics. Scandals, including the furore over MPs' expenses, have eroded trust in parties across the political spectrum. The BNP are using this to their advantage, offering themselves up as a 'moral' alternative. They aren't.

However, it's pretty easy to deal with the BNP: their policies are racist and nasty, many are hopelessly inconsistent and others are utterly unworkable. Engage them in a debate and they dig their electoral grave in short order.

Some newspapers and publications are choosing not to report on BNP activity as they don't want to give them any more attention. However, the BNP are out there, engaging with voters and getting their messages across. We need to expose these for what they are: racist, pure and simple, and the media can and should play a big part in this.

The BNP's promises in their election literature don't stand up to even the lightest scrutiny. Other political parties need to challenge their policies to expose the racial hatred and scapegoating behind them.

So, there are two ways to ensure that Nick Griffin and the BNP don't get elected here in the north west: show up their policies and their people for what they are; and vote for someone else on 4th June.

Meantime, check this out.

Rob's just directed me to your blog. Very well said Catherine. I've been covering the advertising inbox at Manchester Evening News and we've just received a flux of hatemail from BNP supporters because we printed a preventative expose about how horrendous they are. Got a flier myself and felt physically nauseous!
