Tories skip over Euro banana skin

David Cameron trod deftly through the Lisbon referendum minefield last week. Now his party must focus on the things that matter most, suggests Dougal Paver.

Bill Clinton's memorable rejoinder that "it's the economy, stupid" is, one suspects, stencilled all over Conservative Party central office.

Right now, our relationship with Europe is a sideshow for most people: what matters is the state of the economy and what can be done to improve it. Europe can wait.

David Cameron's instinctive grasp of this guided him well through last week's choppy waters - and the media gave him the plaudits he sought.

And now that the election rumour mill has moved from May 6th to March 25th 2010, Cameron's steady fleshing out of his party's policies must pick up pace. The country - and the media - want to know what voting Conservative means this time around.

That's a tricky position, of course: give too much away too early and you give the opposition the chance to nick your best ideas, challenge your average ones and rubbish those without a solid research foundation. Timing will be key and, thus far, Cameron shows he has a knack for that.

We'll find out in March. Or maybe May.
