Time flies for life's milestones

Sheila Graham

In a few days' time I'm to become a mother-in-law: how did that happen? The butt of a million jokes; how far would Les Dawson (and a zillion comedians before and since) have got without the mother-in-law? I don't know that I can stand it.

And where did the time go? Not only can I clearly recall the births of my beautiful boys, I can still remember the stomach-churning excitement of having my pregnancies confirmed. Then there's the first tooth, the thrill of the first stumbling steps, the delight of the first word (even if it was "Daddy"...).

All those firsts, and then there's the first day at school, biting back the tears (mine), how grown up they look in their school uniforms at four years old.

Fast forward a few years and it's uni - v- work (one to each) and watch their social lives take off. Then there's the worry of nights out in town, boys being every bit at risk of harm these days as girls. It's a mother's lot to fret.

And the years roll by and they get older - which is strange, as I stopped doing so some years ago. At this rate, they will be older than I am quite soon.

And now one of them is to be married.

When I go into sentimental mode, I can see the terror in my family's eyes. Are they afraid that, like Topol, I'm going to break into 'Sunrise, Sunset' at the wedding?

Well I won't. If I cry at the service it will be from considering the passage of time, not because I'm sad. The groom- and bride-to-be are two people in love and I don't think you can ask more for your children but that they find happiness and contentment.

Now, if they'll just leave it a while before they make me a grannie ...

Nah! I don't believe a word of it. You'd be a great Grannie. But you'll make sure it's Nan. And remember, you get to choose when you see your grandchildren and you get to give them back, so you can both have a sleep...
