They Say Tomato…

"Compare and contrast the following statements". Martyn Best recalls what they used to ask at school:

"The rules are meant to be bent sometimes"

"We reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals"

Both have been recently voiced by politicians, and both provide totally and sadly contrasting views of how the eminent guardians of our future conduct themselves.

In voicing the first quote, our dear gracious Lord Taylor, and perhaps his fellow Lords Snape, Truscott and Moonie , allegedly have a different view of how they should conduct themselves on our behalf.

Our favourite man of the moment seems to make no excuse for having standards as standard. This should not be a hard policy, and Barack Obama does not give out any excuses for having honesty and integrity as his only option. The consequences of such standards may give difficult choices - yes, by all means close Guantanamo and stop torturing your enemies, but then how is true justice achieved? Well, maybe by having strong clear laws which are designed to do the right thing, and protect the innocent and law abiding - oh, and that means all of them, not just those who can allegedly write out handsome personal lobbying cheques.

Others seem to have integrity as perhaps Option 1, and then let's see what other options there may be, I hear whispered in the hallowed chambers.

The change in leadership in the USA is showing almost daily examples of how politicians should conduct themselves, and is putting to shame the old joke of how one is able to tell if a politician is lying - "their lips move".

If America sneezes and we catch a cold, then a dose of integrity, honesty and decency will be more than welcome, if not well overdue.
