The wonderful world of hen-dos

It normally starts with a round-robin email - you know, always from a friend of a friend that you once said hi to at some function or another. But increasingly it's the subject matter from these near strangers that strike dread into the steeliest of hearts: the infamous hen-do.

I seem to be at the stage in my life where a lot of my friends are getting married. Gone are the carefree days of attending 21st birthdays, raves in muddy fields and student parties. Now, it seems, a large amount of my weekends are taken up with hen dos and weddings.

This weekend took me up to Leeds for a fun filled weekend of Bunny ears, baby oil and drinking through phallic straws.

Beauty treatments abounded, champagne was quaffed by the bucketful and credit cards were given a serious examination at the city's boutiques. In this respect, it was a typical hen do but luckily there were no t-shirts with garish slogans and all the devil horn and feather boa wearing was strictly kept inside the hotel. Personally, for this, I was hugely grateful.

Don't get me wrong: once I get into the swing of these things, I enjoy them. You never really know someone until you have seen them on a hen do. You suddenly discover your most stylish school friend spends her working days with a gaggle of women who think it's hilarious to pinch random men's bottoms.

But another reason I enjoy being out with the hens is visiting different places. This weekend took me to Leeds, last weekend to Pembridge near Leominster, whilst shortly I'll be off to Brighton and then a little village in Shropshire I've never heard of.

From a girl's point of view, Leeds has great shops and I was surprised just how much the city had to offer.

I got lost in the business district looking for the hotel and I was taken aback at how vast it is. There are fewer cranes on the skyline than Liverpool, but Leeds is a more complete city. It almost points us to what Liverpool can become after the Liverpool One project and other regeneration is complete. Again, from a girl's point of view, I'm just looking forward to the shopping.
