Taking a walk on the dark side

I'm a relative newcomer to Paver Smith - yes I'm pleased to announce that today marks exactly a month since I plunged into 'the dark side.'

As a former journalist, hacks often joke about their PR contacts working for 'the dark side.' Now I'm pleased to report that my new career should actually be called 'the happy side.' As one former colleague pointed out to me the other day, he always thought I was "too happy" to be a journalist anyway.

But where else would you get to thrive on the vibrancy and challenges of handling a diverse range of clients every single day?

Admittedly at first I struggled with the lack of immediate deadlines and the juggling act. But now I like to think I'm getting to grips with it all - and enjoying it.

Fortunately my years as a journalist have come in handy when it comes to two of my clients, both glossy magazines which are about to hit the streets. One's for those great guys at Metquarter.

A great example of PR I encountered in my past life was from a mobile phone company who wanted me to review a piece of hands-free kit. Rather than send it through the post for me to stare at and wonder exactly what to do with it, they delivered it to my front door - inside a brand new BMW which I had full use of for a week.

On another occasion my driving skills were put to the test by a TV channel when I did some track racing with Top Gear's James May sat in the back watching my every move.

Both companies obviously received fantastic coverage because they had provided some real 'hands on' experience.

I can't promise any BMWs but am looking forward to an exciting future ahead on the not-so-dark side.
