I have
been reliably informed that it is a good time for British sports at
the moment, with Andy Murray and the cricket team both doing us
proud at the weekend.
But when the sun is shining and the
days are long, it is also a good time for another great British
tradition - whiling away afternoons in the comfort of a country pub
beer garden.
Whether your favourite tipple is a
glass of Pimms, a classic gin & tonic or a local ale (or,
heaven forbid, you're the designated driver) there can be few
such simple pleasures.
And indulging this pleasure is also
good for the economy, helping to prevent another pub closure (39
each week at the last count.) Well, we all have to do our bit,
don't we?
The Guardian has helpfully pulled
together its recommended top 200 watering holes in a specially
created Guide to Summer Pubs section.
Where would I recommend? The
Patterdale Hotel, not far from lake Ullswater in the Lake District
is ideal for a post-walk drink, as is Ambleside's Britannia
Inn.
I've also recently had the
pleasure of helping re-launch the Bear's Paw in Warmingham,
Sandbach, which is giving locals a good reason to eat out.
So if you're stuck for something
to do this summer, get some friends together, hop in the car and
support a truly great British institution.
