Summer in the city

Now that the sun is finally gracing us with its presence with a bit more regularity, it is the perfect time to get out and explore Liverpool.

When people talk about the city - at least people my age - you'll hear the words "great nightlife" and "Liverpool One" thrown around, but not much else.

Last weekend, myself and couple of friends ventured into town for the day. Unsurprisingly, this was to shop, eat and drink, primarily.

But as we wandered from Cafe Nero on Castle Street to the Albert Dock for a glass of something stronger, the glaring sun brought out the details and intricacies of the city's architecture.

I can't count how many times I've been to the Port of Liverpool building for meetings but it was only last weekend that I stopped to appreciate its beauty and grandeur.

After a late lunch on Bold Street (The Italian Club - worth a visit) we walked to the bus stop on Hardman Street. On our way there, we stumbled across a live band playing at the Rockscape installation from the Biennial.

For a city with such a rich musical offering, I'm a little embarrassed to confess it has been months since I saw a local band play live (unless Girls Aloud at the Echo Arena counts?)

With free entry, we were kept thoroughly entertained for a good half hour before dashing around the corner to catch the number 74.

For all the sunburn, hay fever and melted ice cream summer may bring with it, it is also the best time to discover what our wonderful city has to offer beyond its shops and watering holes.
