Sport stars caught offside

Yesterday it was revealed that Ashley Cole could be facing a fine of up to £400,000 by Chelsea FC for dragging the name of his football club through the mud as revelations of his infidelities continue to fill the gossip pages.

There are obvious parallels with what Tiger Woods has gone through, and last week he came out of the other end - so to speak - when he recorded a public apology to his wife, family and sponsors, many of whom were in the audience.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out for the two men. While both have done things that tarnish their image, they are starting from very different places.

Tiger Woods is a sportsman who, up until the revelations came to light, was held in high regard and adored by his fans and respected by non-golf fans. Cole, meanwhile, already has a shady reputation and garners little sympathy from a public who read stories about him almost crying when his weekly salary didn't have quite enough zeros on the end for his liking.

In that sense, I suspect the two will emerge from their respective scandals back where they started.

Great for Tiger Woods, not so much for Ashley Cole.

I completely agree. It also seems Cole is trying to pull a clever PR stunt by claiming his actions were due to a \"sex addiction\", in the hope the public will believe the antics were not his fault. Unfortunately for him, I doubt the British public or Ms Tweedy will be fooled by this attempt to claw back an already tainted image.
