Hello, or should that be Ni
hao (nee-Ha-OW)?
I for one will be advising my clients to start
brushing up on their Cantonese and Mandarin now the city's
international profile is about to be raised even further.
In the unlikely event you've not yet heard,
I'm talking about the news that Liverpool has kicked 100
competing cities in to touch for the right to exhibit at the
Shanghai World Expo in 2010.
But, as with the PR industry, winning the pitch is
not even half the battle. Once the back slapping has stopped, the
challenge becomes maximising the opportunities this presents - and
make no mistake, Liverpool has a unique chance in Shanghai.
As one of only 40 cities across the world and the
only UK city outside London to have a dedicated presence at the
five-month-long event, the news represents a massive opportunity
for Liverpool's business community to show its wares on the
global stage.
Here, the past few years have been focused on successfully hosting
this year's Capital of Culture celebrations. Despite the
inevitable hiccups, we have all seen for ourselves, not only the
major impact on the regeneration and restructuring of the city, but
also the way in which it is now viewed nationally and
internationally.
Now the focus will turn to Liverpool's twin
city Shanghai, but our presence will be every bit as important
there as our own cultural celebrations have been at home.
A city like ours can never rest on its laurels and
now the challenge is to seize the next opportunity to demonstrate
our skills and enterprise to a much broader business
market.
