It's that time of year
again when vast swathes of the television watching public become
embroiled in an ongoing saga relating to the abilities of a number
of young hopefuls.
Next week sees the opening round of
the fifth series of The Apprentice and the BBC's press office
has managed to achieve the fine balance of providing good publicity
for the upcoming show while acknowledging that we're in choppy
economic waters.
This pieceon The Guardian's website demonstrates how
PR can operate on an incredibly subtle level tapping into the
current news agenda on multiple levels including: job insecurity,
worklessness, training and skills, public sector responsibility,
disposable income etc, all in the name of publicising the opening
slot of a new series.
The purpose of the article - from the
provider's point of view - is almost totally masked by the
different elements within the story but not quite.
