It's that time of year again when vast swathes of the television watching public become embroiled in an ongoing saga relating to the abilities of a number of young hopefuls.

Next week sees the opening round of the fifth series of The Apprentice and the BBC's press office has managed to achieve the fine balance of providing good publicity for the upcoming show while acknowledging that we're in choppy economic waters.

This pieceon The Guardian's website demonstrates how PR can operate on an incredibly subtle level tapping into the current news agenda on multiple levels including: job insecurity, worklessness, training and skills, public sector responsibility, disposable income etc, all in the name of publicising the opening slot of a new series.

The purpose of the article - from the provider's point of view - is almost totally masked by the different elements within the story but not quite.
