Shell Gas Direct

Shell Gas

Shell Gas Direct (SGD) is a leading supplier of natural gas to UK businesses.

The company is the UK branch of Shell Energy Europe and a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell UK, part of the Shell Group.

SGD supplies 2.3 billion cubic meters of gas (828 million therms) to 7,000 customers in the UK every year. Customers range from small businesses to large corporations operating in a diverse range of markets including catering, the public sector, national retail, launderettes, offices, and energy-intensive industries.

The company began life in 1989 as Quadrant Gas Ltd - a joint venture between Shell and Esso, established to market gas to British Gas. Following the acquisition of Gas-Direct Ltd in 1995, Shell bought-out Esso's stake in the business and re-branded as Shell Gas Direct Ltd.

In addition to organic growth, Shell Gas Direct has since acquired Texaco's industrial and commercial gas business (1998), a portfolio of SME customers from Total (1998) and the medium-sized customers of the Alliance / Statoil portfolio (2001).

Shell Energy Europe and Shell Gas Direct became part of the same group in 2001 to cement Shell's European gas and power plans.

The company employs more than 140 people at its headquarters in central London and across the UK.
