PR plan key to LFC takeover success

As LFC's chairman Martin Broughton reflected this week, you would have had to of been on 'planet zog' in order to have escaped the latest unravelling saga in the corridors of power at Anfield.

With the ownership soap opera seemingly reaching its climax in the high court next week it has been fascinating, if somewhat uncomfortable viewing, to see how the whole episode has been played out in the media.

The key objective for the latest set of American 'custodians' will be to win over the 'hearts and minds' of the increasingly sceptical fan base.

As certain tabloid editors will be able to testify people have long memories on Merseyside and can be unforgiving when they feel they have been wronged.

The fact that fans have had their fingers burned in the past with broken promises and debt burdens that have crippled the club, will make their task all the more difficult.

They will have to manage expectation as well executing a cleverly structured PR campaign in order to win fan approval.

Critically they will have to quickly implement a strategy to start to engage directly with disenfranchised supporters who have heard it all before.

This may take longer than people imagine but if they are proactive rather than reactive then we may just start to see this once great institution return to its rightful* place at the top echelons of the English game.

And as I am sure Dougal and Martyn would agree what better place to start than at Goodison next weekend?

Editor: *Rightful place? No club has a right to be anywhere. It has to be earned, game-by-game. History is bunk.
