England is going for a sporting double. Not content with landing the 2012 Olympics, England has this week launched its bid to host the 2018 world cup(and just in case we don't get it, we're also pitching in for the 2022 ones too).

England's most recent attempt to host the world cup finals was in 2006. And it was a bit of a mess.

This has led to the Chief Executive of the bid to go on the record and state, right from the outset, that the bid should not appear to be in any way arrogant.

It's a difficult line to tread. Let's be honest, England should get the chance to host one of these tournaments. The last time we had the honour was some time in the mid to late 1960s. The rival nations this time include Mexico (which seems to host the finals every 12 years by default) and the US of A (and who wants to see Diana Ross missan open goal in the opening ceremony again?).

But it is obviously not cut and dried. The communications battle is on and England's bid has started well. We've wheeled out a who's who of English footballing aristocracy for the launch including: Sirs Charlton and Hurst, David Beckham and Adrian Chiles.

We are up against some formidable opponents (including Barack the invincibleand his soccer world-series) but at the kick off, the game is ours to lose. We will have to take each battle one at a time, stay in control and take our chances.

Failing that, there's always 2026 - 60 years of hurt and all that.
