Last Friday saw some of the biggest names in entertainment come together for the Hope for Haiti telethon.
Broadcast across the globe to an audience of millions, the telethon raised more than £35m and will continue to accept donations for the next six months on www.hopeforhaitinow.org
Events like this, where celebrities with bank balances most of us can only dream of are wheeled out to beg for donations, are often followed with sneering comments along the lines of "they're just doing it for publicity, why don't they donate their own cash".
And then, just because we can, we complain when they do make donations because...you guessed it...they're just doing it for the publicity. Whether they are or aren't is immaterial - they are also raising awareness of important causes.
The simple fact is that the likes of Madonna, Jay Z, George Clooney and Bono command attention and they have all given their time to help raise this valuable money.
For the record, I find Bono and Madonna's preaching nauseating usually, but hopefully you will join me in casting aside the cynicism for a moment and just appreciate the good work they have done.
