Lauren Thompson
The build up to summer 2008 has been lead by
the gloom and doom stories highlighted in Rachel's blog
such as gas rises, electric charges, rain fall levels and most
importantly petrol price rises.
Now apart from the latter (which affects me greatly) I do tend to
be rather single-minded in terms of my focus on all things
equestrian and whilst I do listen to the persistent moaning of
those within earshot I have to admit it doesn't feature much in
the wonderful world of "face-book".
However, as this "summer"
has come and nearly gone, (not memorable for gorgeous weather,
hosepipe bans or barbecues) I have been totally gob-smacked by how
the Olympics have altered
the mood of my friends and family.
The fascinating sight of the older
generation (sorry Dad) screaming at the TV as Louis Smith swings
himself around a stuffed horse that frankly doesn't look
anything like a horse, is something to behold.
Overheard hard luck stories about the heartbreak of Beth Tweddle and how the French
team just nabbed the bronze in the women's archery are swiftly
overshadowed by the one-two position for "us" in that
bike race.
From athletics to wrestling with
in-between sports such as BMX'ing, canoeing, diving, sailing
etc…the most valued and prized asset is "someone from
Britain", the more local the better and the opportunity to
scream our support and admiration.
The often used quote of "sport lifting the nation" was
never more true than the summer of 2008 through the fantastic
achievements of Team GB. Well done to them all.
