Throughout 2010, the Oddfellows will mark their biggest celebration
to date. To celebrate this 200th birthday, the Society have
published a beautiful hardback book detailing their first two
hundred years.
The story of the last two centuries, including many dramatic
changes, is chronicled in this well-researched, readable and lively
history, lavishly illustrated with many wonderful photographs,
documents and personal stories.
To celebrate the publication of this book, the Oddfellows hosted a
Book Launch on Tuesday 23 February at the People's History
Museum in Manchester.
Attending the event were Alison Firth, Lord Mayor of Manchester;
Dorothy Deacon, the Chairman of the Oddfellows and Daniel Weinbren,
the author of the book.
The Oddfellows was formed in Manchester in 1810 - hence the full
name, Independent Order of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity Friendly
Society. The Society has held a presence in Manchester since its
formation, demonstrated by two purpose built buildings used as the
central office; one in Grosvenor Street and one in Fountain Street.
