So we're in a recession, but that shouldn't mean we curl up and hide, argues Rachel Smith.
Yesterday's news that Paver Smith completed the acquisition of Stripe Communications caused a bit of a stir.
Lots of congratulations and dozens of sales pitches from an impressively aggressive Mancunian business community: everything from office suppliers to fit-out businesses, M&E consultants to hotels, sandwich suppliers and even florists. They don't muck about in Manchester.
All very flattering and I suppose it shows that in the current febrile environment people are seeking out good news as evidence that we're not all doomed. And guess what? We're not.
Having said that, you've got to come out fighting. If you curl up and wait for a kicking someone will eventually give you one. Economies are no different.
Innovate. Invest in training. Focus on your clients and your service. Hustle harder. Offer more value. Be more flexible. All this and more, but don't just hunker down and wait for the storm to pass.

Congratulations on the takeover and give my regards to Dougal. Also like the sound advice on running a business in a recession.
