New Year Resolutions

At the start of any new year, people often start to think about things they will change for the months ahead. One big change waiting in the media this year is that of the introduction of pay walls i.e. charging consumers for online content.

The Times is already planning to introduce a charge to view its online content later this year, while regionally the Planet Confidential group of lifestyle sites, which includes sites for Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester, are exploring their options for charging people to view their websites.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out, particularly for regional websites. It will, I think, be a difficult balance to strike to get enough paying subscribers to make it a financially viable model while still attracting enough hits, or readers, to attract the advertisers.

One without the other would simply put the news outlets in the same position they are now, only with their income coming from subscribers rather than advertisers.
