Liz Jones, the Daily Mail lifestyle columnist (think Bridget Jones
without the wit or charm), is just one of many newspaper
journalists writing about the
Apprentice final, but her ramblings make for a frustrating
read.
Much has been made of the fact that the two finalists are female
and Jones begins her latest column by claiming to "rally
against the many injustices" aimed at women.
This is before attributing the success of the finalists, Kate Walsh
and Yasmina Siadatan, to their "propensity for short
skirts" and Kate's status as a "blonde goddess."
She chooses not to acknowledge 27 year old Yasmina's running
of a successful restaurant or Kate's impeccable presentation
skills, sales technique and professional demeanour.
But then this is a woman who regularly reduces the achievements of
female politicians to whether or not they're having a good hair
day or are carrying this season's handbag.
Jones then criticises Sir Alan's choice of interviewers - all
but one of them male, all the wrong side of middle-aged - but
forgets to mention his trusted aide, Margaret Mountford, whose
success may be down to many things, but a propensity for short
skirts is not among them.
People often talk about women having to break through a glass
ceiling to succeed in the workplace, but that is nothing compared
to the stereotyping and nonsense of airhead newspaper columnists.
Fortunately for Kate and Yasmina, they have both shown themselves
to be more than capable of rising above this and I'm sure they
will both enjoy success in whatever they choose to do.
