Murray Mania has started
to sweep the country.
On Monday night, Andy Murray's
marathon match against Stanislas Wawrinka attracted over 12 million
viewers - 7 or so million more than would normally be watching BBC
One at that time: the entire pub I was in in Manchester erupted in
cheers and applause after his win.
Support for Murray is high, but it
hasn't always seemed to be that way, and quite unfairly so.
Much has been made of his personality, and how audiences and the
public failed to warm to him.
Some may have, and may still, see him
as dour and uncharismatic. I think his focus, determination and
passion shine through. It is refreshing to see a high profile
sports person getting their head down, training hard and achieving.
Now Murray seems to be in the best
form of his career and public opinion is duly turning.
Murray is an extremely talented
player, has become a real athlete and has a fantastic chance of
claiming his first grand slam title this week. The pressure on
him is immense but he can hopefully continue to take this in his
stride.
And let's hope he takes the
Wimbledon title on Sunday.
