Mum's the word

Forget secret love children, the latest must have accessory for the glitterati appears to be secret fathers.

First, stylish French justice minister, Rachida Dati, set tongues wagging among the Parisian elite after refusing to reveal the identity of her unborn child.

And now British movie star Minnie Driver has followed suit after remaining distinctly tight-lipped about the paternity of her first child Henry.

I have to admit to being something of a closet feminist and this part of me applauds Driver and Dati.

They are both super successful career women who have waited until their early 40s and late 30s respectively before considering motherhood.

And all seemingly without a man by their side (or at least not one they are admitting to).

However, in PR terms I can't help wondering if all this mystery is a good idea.

Firstly, it makes me wonder why they don't want to admit who the fathers are?

This leads me to the conclusion that they are either extremely famous, married or ugly.

Of course there is an alternative option and that is that the mothers simply don't know who the father is themselves, but on this I couldn't possibly comment.

The only clue Minnie presented was that she did not want to marry the father of her child but he would still play a part in her son's life.

Cue, lots of journalists and paparazzi pursuing Miss Driver and her mini-me around LA until they un-mask the mysterious dad.

Ms Dati is in a more enviable position thanks to France's strict privacy laws, which would prevent the publication of such a thing.

Even when the politician appeared in public quite obviously pregnant there was little discussion of it in the media until she officially announced it.

Ultimately, creating a debate around the parentage of their children has certainly not done the profiles of Driver and Dati any harm at all.

Publications across the world have devoted substantial column inches debating who the mysterious papas may be.

Let's just hope Driver and Dati juniors don't grow up bearing an uncanny resemblance to their fathers a la Boris Becker and Mick Jagger's love children!
