They need the money more than I need the pounds

Forty pounds is a lot of weight to shift, says Dougal Paver. But fear of not reaching his Pyrennean peak should see to that.

Take a look at Monte Perdido. That's more than 11,000 feet - which, to put it in context, is more than three times higher than Snowdon.

I've got a picture of 'the lost mountain' (for so goes the translation) on my desk with a reminder that if I'm to haul myself up it then I'd better be 40lbs lighter than I was on 4th January.

Every pound of excess weight you carry up a mountain is multiplied eight-fold on the downward journey in terms of stress on your knee and ankle joints. So in reality, I'll be relieving my knees of the shared burden of dealing with 320lbs of needless pressure.

Myself, Besty and our intrepid band of trekkers won't be atop the peak until 5th July so losing around 7lbs a month is imminently do-able, especially when you're on the Atkins diet. But then there's the small matter of getting fit, too. That starts next week.

Why bother? Because the marvellous staff and volunteers at Claire House Children's Hospice need the money we'll raise in sponsorship to carry on their outstanding work. Motivation enough, if you've ever been there.

This is our third trek across the Spanish Pyrenees for Claire House and set to be the most challenging yet. I'll be rattling the collection tin at the beginning of June and there are some very needy children indeed who'd be hugely grateful for whatever you can spare.

In advance, therefore, very many thanks.
