A sad moment, that Martyn
Best reflects upon as one of the music world's most
influential icons dies.
There have been very few true major influences on the world of
popular music as we know it today, and following in the footsteps
of Elvis Presley and John Lennon, in his inimitable moon-walking
style was without a shadow of doubt, Michael
Jackson.
From his 1969 singing debut with the Jackson 5, through the record
breaking 40 million sales of Thriller, to many, many striking
images he gave us, Michael Jackson changed the world of pop music.
Whatever may have been thought about his unconventional private
life, from either a human or musical viewpoint, Jackson was the
acknowledged 'King of Pop'. He has provided songs that have
delighted, and songs that have changed views - he provided great
hope to a generation, and joy to millions; and with the
anticipation of a major comeback, there is a cruel poignancy to his
death today.
