Mersey football battle

When recently re-reading Antony Beevor's gripping and horrifying account of the Red Army's assault on Berlin in 1945, it reminded me that there is nothing like conflict to exacerbate the need to communicate.

Thankfully, because of these battles using tanks, aeroplanes and bombs, we still have a media which acts as the sphere for these communications to take place.

Although not perfect, our esteemed 4th estate is a vital part of our civic society and can be a genuine force for good.

My local paper, The South Manchester Reporter, recently ran an article covering a new pressure group's attempts to stop a sports development on publicly accessible land adjacent to the River Mersey at Chorlton Meadows.

Conspiracy theorists would have you believe that the media will always side with business interests and power in any circumstance. While the paper is not exactly campaigning with the pressure group, by providing them with the platform to explain their position, they do themselves a great deal of credit.

And I for one applaud them.
