According to figures released by the Department for Transport this week, the Port of Liverpool enjoyed its busiest quarter for five years as it continues to win market share.
Liverpool handled 8.79m tonnes of cargo in the last three months of 2010, 19% higher than the previous year and the largest volume since the final quarter of 2005.
The figures reveal that Liverpool has increased its share of the market every year for the past three years and confirm the city's place as the UK's seventh busiest port.
The romantics among us will be pleased to see that sea trade is still an important and growing contributor to the economy of our city. With plans for a Liverpool superport, capable of receiving post-panamax vessels, already in the pipeline, this positive trend will hopefully continue.
The sea is an inextricable part of Liverpool's culture and identity and it's good to know that maritime still matters to Merseyside. And, as fully paid-up members of Mersey Maritime, we're right behind it.
