Liverpool Trekkers conquer a snowy Helvellyn

Denuded by injuries and illnesses but never lacking in enthusiasm, a small team of intrepid trekkers conquered Helvellyn last week in testing conditions.

The group, organised by Paver Smith MD Dougal Paver and led by former mountain guide Fraser Mackay, took the westerly route from the shores of a frozen Thirlmere.

They were greeted on their return to a feast of home cooking and champagne from Dougal, whose crocked knee prevented him from scaling the peak. Any excuse, eh?

The next trek is up Sharp Edge on April 1st.

Oh, little did they know what was in store... We buried our dead in true mountaineering style If only they had Dougal's carrot and orange soup...
