Liverpool: Capital of Culture and Champions of Europe?

In 2003, Liverpool received the news that it was to be European Capital of Culture 2008; I remember the day vividly, as do most Liverpudlians proud of their heritage and city. The general feeling was that we'd finally got the recognition our rich culture deserved.

Our friends at the other end of the M62 are nervous about our renaissance - witness the fevered discussions in Albert Square about how they combat the threat of Liverpool One, Grosvenor's huge new shopping district. Let's face it we don't need their shops or arena any more - we've got our own.

So how come those same people who rejoiced at the news of our culture win are bemoaning how the city hasn't done anything for its people except waste 'our' money and accrue debt.

No surprises: I disagree. If Liverpool had its culture status ripped away tomorrow I would still think the year a major success. Yes, it's had its faults and yes, those in power have made mistakes, but you can't hide the fact tourist numbers are up 30 per cent year on year, the skyline is punctuated with tower cranes, the hotels, restaurants, theatres and museums are booming and we've got people all over the world talking about the city for reasons other than The Beatles and football.

Is 2008 Liverpool's year? Most definitely, and the economic slow down isn't going to stop us celebrating either. Nor, for that matter, is the thought of Liverpool going to Stamford Bridge and having to get a score draw or win - come on you reds! Liverpool Capital of Culture and Champions of Europe 2008 - fingers crossed!

Brain teaser: Name the four key events that occurred in both 1981 and 2005?

Factual amendment: Also, with 11 Liverpool fans and seven Everton fans, most of our office support LFC. (This merely shows the vitality of our equal opportunities policy - Editor)

The other end of the M62. That's like Hull isn't it. I have some friends from Hull - lovely people. It's the horrid bunch halfway along that I'd keep an eye on.

I think those 11 should be named - the equal opportunities policy was not intended to be that equal.

liverpool is a great place to live in, although if LFC win the CL, the place will become intolerable.

As a 'friend' nearer to the other end of the M62 - well said Miss Mallia. Liverpool is a fantastic city to work in.
