Liverpool's Capital of Culture year is definitely living up
to its hype; well that's certainly my opinion anyway. Am I
biased? Of course - any born and bred scouser is fiercely
protective of 'our culture year' and any criticism that
might be associated with it.
Personally, I have never been so inundated with requests to attend
events, concerts, shows, festivals and exhibitions, all of which
are taking place in my city. It really is exciting and it's
come at a pretty good time, what with the pressures of the credit
crunch. For the past few months people have been cutting back and
explaining how they can't afford a holiday this year.
Don't fear Capital of Culture is here.
This year is the best year to abandon the beach
holiday, save some cash and capitalise on Liverpool's great
summer schedule. Take your pick from Manet, Monet, Tissot and
Hopper at the Walker Art Gallery in Art in the Age of Steam, Klimt
at Tate Liverpool, Ben Johnsons superb panorama of Liverpool (also
at the Walker), Simon Rattle conducting both the Berlin and
Liverpool Philharmonic orchestras, not forgetting the theatres, the
Tall Ships races, Antony Gormley's Iron Men on the Crosby
shore, the Magical History Tour at the Maritime Museum, the
ferry…the list goes on.
Whatever you plan to do and see you're sure to find plenty to
accommodate both friends and family over the summer. For this
weekend why not do a spot of socialising (or networking for you PR
types) at the Lord Mayor's parade on Saturday or head to the
Liverpool Philharmonic for a few laughs with Jimmy Carr.
