Let the finger-pointing begin

The euro has been saved - for now. Let the finger-pointing begin amongst the media and the currency's cheerleaders, says Dougal Paver.

With a sad inevitability the Irish government has signed away its sovereignty to save its economy and a political experiment that was always doomed to fail.

Britain's right wing media is jumping up and down with glee, enjoying a bout of 'told you so' that looks set to run for a while yet. Today Ireland, tomorrow Portugal, Greece and Spain.

Here's a good example of finger-wagging from Daniel Hannan MEP. Boy, is he enjoying the moment. With British banks on the hook for £150bn of loans to Ireland I think we should be careful what we wish for.

The problem with the euro? It's the same as school uniforms: one size doesn't fit all. Anyone can tell you that. The politicians chose to ignore that fact because they had a political imperative to make the currency a success - in so doing proving, as they inevitably would, that economics always trumps politics when the two collide.

Curiously, the BBC, amidst its excellent coverage of the crisis, is remarkably silent about the fact that it was one of the chief cheerleaders for Britain joining the euro.
