The first Merseyside team to play at the old Wembley becomes the first to play at the new one this Sunday, notes Dougal Paver. And the expectations of their supporters are nothing if not realistic.
Last time I was at Wembley we won the FA Cup. That was 14 years ago and Everton's lifetime trophy winning average has been one every twelve years since 1878.
So we're overdue some silverware.
Our opponents in this weekend's FA Cup semi-final are Manchester United, the team we beat in 1995. "Rhino had Sparky in his back pocket, la" was the phrase of the moment. And he did.
Thing is, this time around the entire blue brethren seem to be indulging in a bout of expectation management. "It's just a nice day out." "Will be great to see the new place." "I'm booked in to a lovely Italian in Harrow before the match." And so it goes on.
Have we become inured to bad news? Are we so pessimistic about the Moyesiah's abilities against the evil red hordes that we have to talk down our chances?
I don't think so. Call us realists.
It'll be a great day out and we'll post some nice pics on this site on Monday. And if we win, well, we'll have another great day out to look forward to against Chelsea or Arsenal.
