2009 is now here and people have made their New Year
resolutions, but many of these may now be long forgotten.
At Paver Smith we have made a collective resolution to 'green
up' the office, reduce our carbon footprint, and achieve the
environmental management standard ISO 14001.
We are aiming to reduce our levels of waste, recycle as much as
possible and increase our awareness of green issues and our impact
upon the environment.
In PR, we get through huge amounts of paper in the office, from
working, to reading up on the vast numbers of newspapers, magazines
and trade publications, and we have always been efficient at
recycling them.
This year, however, has seen the implementation of additional
recycling facilities in the office, and as a result, the biggest
day-to-day change in our office was the removal of the bins from
underneath our desks.
At first it was a bit of a shock to everyone's systems to have
to get up and walk to the kitchen every time we wanted to throw
something away, but it is working, and now people are separating
and recycling the majority of their rubbish. Plus the walks added
up throughout the day are much needed exercise after the Christmas
party season!
Being a committed reducer, re-user and recycler (I have been known
to pull the odd rogue soup can or milk carton from out the bin in
order to recycle it), my colleagues often come to me for recycling
segregation 'advice'. But it has been surprising how
quickly people's habits change, and how easy it is to get into
the routine of recycling regularly.
We're also making small changes in our practices across the
business. For example, we are now changing the way we facilitate
our brainstorms in order to reduce the amount of paper we use.
Of course, being on the 14th floor, and short of
installing our own wind turbine on the Paver Smith
balcony, there is only so much we can do. But we do believe that
every little bit helps, and we are proud of our own contributions
to making our environment a much better place.
