Land Rover evoque an economic boom

Michael Wood

Land Rover's Merseyside factory was ranked by Ford as the most efficient in the world - and now it's driving a new round of job creation, as Michael Wood notes.

There was more good news for our economy this week as the Business Secretary Vince Cable announced a £2bn boost generated by new supply contracts for Jaguar Land Rover's new Range Rover Evoque model.

The Evoque will be built at the carmaker's Halewood factory and is already making waves locally. So far, Halewood has recruited some 1,500 people in preparation for the production of the new model and many of the 40 firms benefiting from JLR's investment are based on the adjacent Boulevard Industry Park.

The Business Secretary, on a tour of the Halewood facility, hailed the news as proof "that the UK automotive supply chain is capable of winning major contracts and creating vital jobs in the UK."

Investment by such a high-profile company in Merseyside manufacturing can only mean good things for the local economy. Jaguar Land Rover have, rightly, shown great faith in the region's ability to supply top-notch products and where they lead others will follow. Evoque represents an important new step on the road to recovery.
