On my way into work this morning I read a very interesting article about Apple's latest drive to conquer the world with the launch of the iSlate / iPad / iTablet /iWhatever…
The article challenges me on two levels. Firstly, how, if at all, will the iSlate - we'll call it that for the time being - change the world of computing? And secondly, should I get one?
Well on the first point time will tell. Not all Apple products succeed. Remember the Apple Cube, a flop in 2000, and what about Apple TV - I bet you don't have one of those at home do you?
No doubt the iSlate will be funky and dead cool to use, and I expect online stuff will be more fun and much easier for those who like to 'do it' on the go.
The success of the touch screen virtual keyboard will be a key factor. It should certainly be a big improvement on the fiddly iPhone touchpad and expect the imaging quality to be even better too. But change the world? I think not. The iSlate seems more evolutionary than a radical new departure.
On the second point, should I get one? Well, as a PR professional I must ensure client messages reach customers via traditional and emerging channels. And there's no doubt, I'm having daily discussions about how to exploit social media and the gadgets people to use with a whole raft of noisy business people and social marketers.
Glancing around at my fellow passengers I clock two tapping away furiously on an iPhone, one watching a film on an iPod Touch and another reading an e-book on their Sony e-reader. They seem happy. The IT revolution doesn't look like slowing down just yet….it's time I joined in.
iSlate launches on Wednesday 27th January 2010
