It was a very good year

With 2008 drawing to a close, and Christmas only a sleigh ride away, I thought it was only appropriate to offer a short synopsis of my year, or what I now come to call... "2000 and great".

To cut a fairly long story short, I graduated from Birmingham University in 2007 and spent the rest of that year working to save money to fund my travels, which began in January 2008.

I started the first leg of my epic journey in Thailand and went on to visit Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and America, before returning to the UK in April. Exhilarated having trekked through Fijian jungles and sky dived from 15,000 feet, I decided to pursue the next chapter in my 2008 story, which was to start a career in public relations.

I have wanted to work in PR since I was eighteen, when I spent over a year and a half working in the media before attending university in 2004. After carrying out some work experience this summer, I decided to send my CV to the north west's best PR agency, Paver Smith, to see if anyone could offer me any advice about how I could set about approaching a career in PR.

I was invited to come into the Paver Smith office and talk to director, Rachel Smith, who offered me some excellent advice about what top PR agencies look for in their employees. After our meeting, I went onto do some more work experience and a month later, to my delight, I received a call to attend an interview for the Paver Smith graduate placement programme.

The graduate placement programme offers intensive training to graduates and is part of Paver Smith's commitment as a recognised Investor in People and signatory of the government's Skills Pledge (not forgeting their commitment to achieving ISO 14001 and their success in securing the consultancy management standard). After a successful interview I began working as a Junior Account Executive for Paver Smith in July 2008, and so my PR career began.

Since I started at Paver Smith I have learned such an incredible amount from all of my senior colleagues and it is fantastic to be surrounded by such an enthusiastic, talented, group of people. Furthermore, I have recently been informed that from the 1st January 2009, I will be a permanent member of the Paver Smith team and start the New Year as an Account Executive. It just goes to show that Paver Smith don't just offer a job, they offer a career. In the words of the late Frank Sinatra, "it was a very good year".
