It’s time to turn the down heat

Next month, world leaders will gather in Copenhagen to discuss climate change and draw up (more) plans to, well, save the world…so that's encouraging.

This week, Paver Smith unveiled the Green Man, our inspired contribution to run an environmentally responsible business.

Today, I calculated my carbon footprint: an astonishing 21 tonnes a year!!! Holy Moses … that's one bucket load of carbon! I am a grade one, walking, talking, environmental disaster and if I don't take radical action soon, we're all going to die!

Gosh, that's really quite bad isn't it?

But have faith. Change is in the air, unless, of course, you're one of those weirdo climate-change-deniers who think this is someone else's problem. So as that great philosopher, Jackson, once said: "…start with the man in the mirror!"

Which brings me to the point of this blog: how do you engage people to act on the environment?

Well, scientists need to provide the science and world leaders the leadership, while protecting capitalist economies, at least in the short term.

Businesses will respond if they think it's good for the bottom line - rewarding companies which sign up to the environmental management standard ISO4001 is a step in the right direction.

People like me need an incentive too. Today, I was shocked by how much of a negative impact I'm having and pledge to draw up a household plan to bring down my carbon footprint. With two young children to look after, I don't want them accusing me in my old age of being too cowardly to act.

Hopefully, innovation will make it easier for us all to reduce waste and make cost-effective environmentally-friendly changes, but in the meantime let me ask you this: what are you going to do right now?

Here's a suggestion, why don't you see how much damage you're causing Mother Earth and calculate your carbon footprint today.

Let's save the world!

Now then where did that Swampy fellow get to….
