Channel 4 announced yesterday that next year's Big Brother
series will be the last, completing an 11 year run.
The show has changed a lot from the first series, when contestants
didn't know what to expect and were entering for the
experience, rather than a desire to become famous.
What viewers are shocked by has also changed over the years. In
series 2, Paul and Helen embarked upon a romance and didn't
want to kiss in front of the cameras, which is a complete contrast
to behaviour in later series.
I watched Big Brother avidly during the first few series, then
became more of a casual viewer before switching off altogether
(haven't watched it all in the last four years or so). However,
up until perhaps last year, I still would have been able to name a
handful of housemates due to the media attention that the show
generated.
This year it has all been different. There is very little written
about the show and I could not name a housemate. People aren't
talking about it and it has definitely lost its buzz.
I won't miss Big Brother, but I am sure Channel 4 will miss the
advertising revenue that it generates. Hopefully they will draw
viewers back in through quality drama and comedy and there'll
be a greater variety of summer viewing.
