Is outrage at Rooney only skin deep?

The past two weekends have been dominated by the personal lives of two of our most popular sportsmen - Wayne Rooney and Ricky Hatton.

The News of the World revealed that Rooney had been using prostitutes in a Manchester hotel while his pregnant wife was at home, and last Sunday the same paper had exclusive images of Hatton secretly filmed taking cocaine.

The response to both incidents has been sheer outrage, with Rooney being the topic of discussion for numerous newspaper columnists, many of them female.

If you cast your mind back a few years, you will remember that David Beckham was found to be cheating on his wife, and the mother of his children. The reaction then was similarly bitter, but very quickly Beckham returned to God-like status in the eyes of the national press. Which was in part because he is easy on the eye.

I wonder if the outrage now directed at Rooney is only skin-deep?

Furious newspaper columnists soon forgot Beckham's indiscretions when he was pictured for an Armani underwear campaign. Meanwhile Rooney, who is often compared to Shrek, can only dream of escaping negative headlines so easily.
