Is Journalism sustainable in the current climate?

Roy Greenslade, the Guardian's media commentator, raised an interesting point on Monday.

He asked whether the number of journalists who are writing for a reducing print readership, is sustainable.

With examples from Italy, Germany, France and Sweden (the UK's figures are currently unavailable) he has a point, although the figures are not truly representative, as they don't take into account the dramatic increase in online readership or the number of journalists required to populate news websites with up-to-date content.

But there is still a difficult balance to strike.

We are always reading about how print advertising is in decline and online advertising doesn't (yet) pick up the slack, so publishers need to find new revenue streams.

The Times has recently added a pay wall to its online site, which feels to me like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, but it is one way of trying to resolve this issue.

It will certainly make for interesting reading when the Times Online releases its latest readership figures.
