There are places in the world where the media ignores the comings and goings of c'lebs, says Dougal Paver.
It shouldn't take a week in the backwoods to remind me that not everyone is as fixated on the comings and goings of celebrities as the British media, but it has.
More than a hundred miles inland from the tabloid-mad Costa del Sol, the pace of Andalucian life is decidedly more tranquil. Page leads about the price of pork and harvesting concerns over the local olive crop were a proper antidote to blanket coverage about premiership stars paying for the company they keep.
Modern life did intrude, of course: there was a story in one local rag about the locals' outrage at new parking control measures and, as and when mobile connectivity allowed, I would sneak a look at Sky News on my iPhone. Thing is, I quickly kicked the habit - sometimes it's good to remain in blissful ignorance.
Now that I'm back, of course, that's all about to be
shattered. Ah well.
