I name that baby in one

Dougal Paver

Dougal Paver, Managing Director

The good Mrs Paver delivers another nipper in to the world today, God-willing. And you can thank your lucky stars that you've not had to sit through our interminable discussions about names.

We long-ago had it sorted if it was a lass: Elizabeth Ann Paver. Works for us, so hang the rest of you.

But if it's a lad? Now that presents an altogether different and more difficult scenario. Helen is a conservative sort of lass who thinks that Anthony is probably a bit racey and that Rory (our two year old) has a name that's a bit 'out there'.

Me? Try being brought up in Liverpool with a name like Dougal then settle for something like Edward. Nah.

And so it is that I've been trawling through the Pantheon of great Gaelic names looking for something suitably strong, different and distinctive. Something that would suit the son of a Dougal and do justice to a proud lineage.

And guess what? There are loads of them. But getting Mrs P to agree to any has been an uphill struggle. Fergal long-since fell by the wayside, as did Dermot, Declan and Patrick (beautifully alliterative, don't you think?).

I'm holding out for Fergus, though. Something tells me that I might just swing that one - and I'd be darned pleased if I did.
