How to solve a problem like emissions

The news Manchester is to be the first city outside London to impose congestion charges is another example of GREAT British thinking.

The finest minds in the land get together to combat the problems of congestion and global warming and the best solution they can concoct is - more taxes.

Now, as somebody who frequently uses the M60 and M62 into Manchester during rush hour I am not particularly enthused at having to pay £5 for my troubles. Why should I when I already pay a shed-load in tax via VED and fuel duty?

Is it possible funds are going towards supporting MPs' lavish holidays, second homes and fancy kitchens?

It's all quite laughable and terrible planning by Labour's communications team. I wonder who came up with the bright idea to announce the congestion charge on the back of the MPs' expenses scandal?

This might seem like a bizarre solution, but instead of fiddling expenses why not put the cash back into improving public transport to make it more reliable and safer, introduce road tax breaks providing an incentive for car sharing or limit access, similar to Italian cities?

No you're right, stupid idea, let's just make the working public pay more and soon enough they will all decide it's better to live off benefits and stop going to work - maybe that's how we solve a problem like emissions.
