Do we now consider that there is renewed hope in the world with the appointment of a new Archbishop of Westminster, the most Reverend Vincent Nichols, contemplates Martyn Best.
The new leader of around 5 million Catholics in England & Wales brings a colourful, pragmatic yet staunchly traditional perspective to this important role, and any priest who hails from a northern, football loving background would, if I had one, receive my vote.
Yet my confidence in the future that this selection gives to so many, is not found so much in the person, but in his background.
By an amazing coincidence, though not quite of biblical proportions, I had the joy of being present at the Most Rev's alma mater last night.
St. Mary's College in Crosby, Liverpool hosted its Sixth form Leavers Mass of Celebration, and my two eldest were very worthy recipients of a touching dedication as they prepare for the last few weeks of pre-A level revision. Jake and Abby, my favourite twins, listened to the moving testimonials given of their contemporaries, and to the sage words of wisdom of another alma mater, Father Tim Byron. He recognized their worthy achievements and highlighted the virtues of friendship, loyalty and integrity that would stand them in fine stead beyond their exam results. Any passing contrast concerning leadership qualities that he may have made with reference to politicians and bankers was surely coincidental.
So from St. Mary's, and undoubtedly many sixth form schools and colleges throughout the land, will spring the hope that we and Archbishop Nichols believe will drive our next generation forwards.
